Lake Anne Neighborhoods

Three Great Communities off Wainwright Drive

I love wandering through the original Reston communities. I’m always struck by the differences in each neighborhood, even those adjacent to each other. Wainwright Drive in the Lake Anne area is a great example. The three townhome communities couldn’t be more different, despite all sharing an excellent location near Reston Town Center and Lake Anne and having been developed within years of each other.

Coleson Cluster

Coleson Cluster, Wainwright DriveMost people who know anything of Reston’s history know about Waterview Cluster — the iconic townhomes on Lake Anne. Few people know that award-winning architect Chloethiel Woodard Smith designed another community of townhomes with the same floor plan and style as nearby Waterview. Coleson Cluster was built during the mid 1960s and comprises 45 townhomes spread over four and a half acres of lush lawn and trees. The townhouses in this beautiful community have a charming mid-century modern meets cottage vibe. They are light and airy, with light and inviting interior spaces. With flat roofs, large windows and contemporary style, they range in size from 1,500 to 2,800 square feet.

Mediterranean Villa, Reston

Mediterranean Villa, Wainwright DriveContinuing the European feel is Mediterranean Villa. Developed in 1970, the Mediterranean Villa homes feature white stucco exteriors with tiled roofs, 2-car garages, and about 1900 to 2500 square feet of living space. It’s a small and tight-knit community of 37 homes sited on a quiet cul-de-sac. Yes, these patio homes are nestled among oaks and pines rather than the coast, but they are as bright and airy as you will find anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Wainwright Cluster

Wainwright Cluster, Wainwright DriveBoston-based PARD Team, a young multi-disciplinary group of urban planners, architects, researchers and designers designed Wainwright Cluster in 1966. The cluster was part of the PARD Team’s mission to meet "the new challenges created by the uncontrolled urbanization of our environment, recent discoveries in the fields of social research, and rapid changes in building technology."

These homes were designed for first time homeowners. There are six models varying in size and layout. However, spacious bedrooms, large closets, ample storage space, breakfast nooks, and ground floor powder rooms are standard in all of them. The homes also feature spacious carports, large storage sheds, well-equipped play areas and private outdoor patios. Grouped into neighborhood subclusters, each neighborhood group is situated around a common landscaped green. Large windows at the rear of each home provide panoramic views of the thickly wooded areas surrounding the subclusters.

All of these neighborhoods are ideally located. Just off North Shore Drive, both Reston Town Center and Lake Anne are an easy walk. In fact, the Reston Association paths in this area are among community favorites and you are guaranteed to run into friends as you walk. The neighborhood is also close to the Reston Metro, Dulles Toll Road and Dulles airport. The kids can walk to Lake Anne Elementary, which is just two blocks away. And the entire family can enjoy the Reston pools and tennis courts, also within walking distance.

Brookshire, Chatham Colony, Wyndmere and Moorings Clusters

moorings driveRight next to Lake Anne Plaza, is a street called Moorings Drive. I think there are a lot of people in the area who think Moorings Drive is a parking lot (it fills on Saturdays in the summer for those shopping at the Reston Farmer’s Market.) Yet there are actually four town home clusters and an apartment complex off Moorings Drive. It’s one of Reston secret neighborhoods; the kind of community where people move in and never want to move out.

The clusters off Moorings Drive are a wonderful mix of the different styles of Reston town homes. This neighbor is not only charming, it’s quiet and close to everything.

Tour of Moorings Drive

Brookshire is the first cluster on the left. It’s one of the first clusters built in Reston in 1964 and 65, and one of Reston’s smallest. Despite it’s humble size, it has an impressive ratio of green space to homes — 5 acres to 26 homes. These two and three bedroom townhomes feature an average of 1,500 square feet of living space. These small colonial style homes are favorites for young families and singles.

Next up is Chatham Colony Cluster. This is also a small cluster with about 45 homes, although they are quite a bit larger than their neighbors. Each also has a wooded backyard. These colonial style townhomes have brick exteriors, shuttered windows, and two designated parking spaces. With three bedrooms and full basements, each home offers plenty of space for growing families and empty nesters alike. And like most Reston homes built in the 1970’s, each has beautiful hardwood floors and large windows.

Next on the tour is Wyndmere Cluster. Built in 1992, it’s the newest addition to this area. These townhomes are more contemporary and feature vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms. Listings in this cluster rarely come up, and when they do, they go fast! Like all of the townhome clusters off moorings, residents have access to Lake Anne.

Finally, there is Moorings Cluster, built between 1971 and 1972. These 50 spacious three- to five-bedroom townhomes have fantastic views of Lake Anne (70% are direct lakefront properties). What makes these townhomes especially unique is that each of the homes has a garage. That makes up for the tight street parking.

Walking to Lake Anne, jogging on the nearby Reston Association paths, or getting to Reston Town Center in a matter of minutes are just a few of the perks of living off Moorings Drive. It’s also close to ballparks, pools, tennis courts, the sprinkler park (off North Shore Drive) and more. Many residents have small boats and canoes that they take out on Lake Anne, enjoying a leisurely paddle to the plaza for concerts, festivals and dining. In the summer, residents can walk to the popular Farmer’s Market and Reston Market. Neighborhood residents attend Reston’s Lake Anne Elementary, Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School.

All of the clusters off Moorings Drive have easy access to main roads and public transportation.

Inlet Cluster, North Reston

inlet clusterInlet Cluster in the Lake Anne neighborhood sports is a small community of 63 townhomes. While none of them are directly on Lake Anne, the cluster has private dock at the inlet where residents can moor their boats.

These contemporary 3-level, 3- to 5-bedroom homes were built in 1971. Every house has a carport space, and there is additional parking throughout the neighborhood. The cluster was designed for privacy, with the homes located behind the parking structures. Having been built in 1971, the trees and landscaping are mature—the neighborhood has a feeling of being nestled in the woods.

Inlet Cluster is located off Wiehle Avenue just north of the Lake Anne dam. It’s about a five-minute walk to Lake Anne Village Center (or a quick paddle in the canoe).

Lakeside Cluster, Lake Anne, Reston

lakeside cluster townhomeI’m partial to Lake Anne neighborhoods. I can’t help it; it’s my neighborhood and I think these little communities are beautiful. They’re also convenient to all the amenities Reston has to offer — including the restaurants at Lake Anne. Lakeside Cluster is one of these gorgeous communities.

Most of the attention around Lake Anne focuses on the famous Waterview Cluster. As a result, Lakeside Cluster doesn’t get as much attention. The community is okay with that. This is a friendly, quiet, unassuming neighborhood.

Lakeside Cluster has the same amenities all of the neighborhoods that border Reston’s Lake Anne share — access to the lake, a quick walk to Lake Anne Village Center, well-designed homes (many of which are direct lakefront).

These townhomes were built between 1965 and 1969. The 90 units are two and three levels with two to four bedrooms. They also have garages (which makes them different than most of their Lake Anne neighbors). All homes have lake access via a trail to the cluster dock, even if they are not direct lakefront property.

The Cluster couldn’t be positioned better. It is located on Greenbriar Road and Orchard Lane off Fairway Drive, which is the south shore of Lake Anne. Fairway Drive provides easy access to both North Shore Drive and Wiehle Avenue.

lakeside cluster dockFor families with children, the cluster is an easy walk to Lake Anne Elementary. Children also attend Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School. For the parents, Lake Side Cluster is only 1.5 miles to the Reston Station Metro, and a short hop to Reston Town Center and the Toll Road. And, of course, a five minute walk to Lake Anne Village Center — home of the Lake Anne Brew House, Lake Anne Coffee House and Wine Bar, Reston Farmer’s Market and several other awesome mom-and-pop restaurants.

Find Your Wooded Sanctuary: Bentana Woods

Bentana WoodsDo you ever dream of finding a quick place in the woods, free from the hustle and bustle of urban life? Except that you like the hustle and bustle of urban life, so you don’t want to go live in the woods. What if you could find both? Bentana Woods is the neighborhood for you.

Bennett of Virginia built these town homes in1972. They’re located in the Tall Oaks section of Reston, Virginia, about 1 mile from the Wiehle Metro Station (which means you could walk there if you wanted to). They’re also a quick walk into Lake Fairfax Park and short drive to Reston Town Center or Lake Anne Plaza. The original Tall Oaks Village Center is slated for redevelopment, so within the next few years there will be new shops and restaurants all a quick walk from your front door. But you won’t be able to tell because this neighborhood is so secluded you feel like you’re in rural Virginia.

The fact that these 3 to 4 bedroom, 1,700 square foot townhouses are charming and well designed is icing on the cake.

Bentana Woods is actually two separate clusters — Bentana Woods Cluster has 48 homes while Bentana Woods West has 108 homes. More than 50% of the neighborhood lands are common areas with open grass, tot lots, and stands of trees — trees that the National Wildlife Federation has certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat.

If you want to be close to the action, but feel like you’re living in a National park, Bentana Woods is the Reston neighborhood for you!

The Sweetest Condo Townhomes in Reston: Ivy Oak Cluster

Ivy Oak ClusterI love Ivy Oak cluster. I think condominiums are a fantastic option for homeowners who don’t want the responsibility for the exterior of their property. But for many young families, a high-rise condo isn’t really an option either. In Ivy Oak Cluster, families can home their home and let someone else worry about the roof.

Ivy Oak Cluster has 96 condos built in 1970/71. The two-story townhomes have three or four bedroom townhomes. They are well designed, feeling much larger than they are. Each also has a nice backyard space, many of which are fenced. For young families, the neighborhood has a large common space with a wonderful playground.

Ivy Oak is located off North Shore Drive in North Reston, close to Temporary Road. That’s the road that connects North Shore Drive and Reston Parkway. Ivy Oak is about a ten-minute walk to Reston Town Center. There is a path that runs between the cluster and the Sallie Mae property, and it leads right out to Old Reston Avenue. Take a left, and then a right on the W&OD path, and Reston Town Center is pretty much right there.

Ivy Oak is also close to both Whole Foods and Harris Teeter, and has easy access to the Reston metro station.

But really, the best thing about this neighborhood is the people. It’s a friendly community. If you want a condo that doesn’t feel like a condo right in the middle of everything, check this neighborhood out.

The Clusters of Moorings Drive, Lake Anne Reston

moorings drive restonHave you ever parked on Moorings Drive on your way to the Reston Farmer’s Market and wondered what kind of houses the street leads to? Let me tell you — it’s a wonderful mix of the different styles of Reston town homes. This neighbor is not only charming, it’s quiet and close to everything.

The first cluster on your left is Brookshire, one of the first clusters built in Reston in 1964 and 65. It’s one of Reston’s smallest clusters and has an impressive ratio of green space to homes — 5 acres to 26 homes. Lush green foliage, magnificent old oak trees, interconnecting paths and recreational areas surround the cluster. These two and three bedroom townhomes feature an average of 1,500 square feet of living space.

Then comes Chatham Colony Cluster. This is also a small cluster, with about 45 homes that each has a wooded backyard.

Next on the tour is Wyndmere Cluster, the newest addition to this area. Like all of the townhome clusters off moorings, residents have access to Lake Anne.

Finally, there is Moorings Cluster, built between 1971 and 1972. These spacious three- to five-bedroom townhomes have fantastic views of Lake Anne (70% are direct lakefront properties). Unlike many lakeside townhouse communities, each of the 50 homes in this neighborhood has a garage.

All of these clusters off Moorings Drive have easy access to main roads and public transportation. This is the kind of neighborhood where you can take full advantage of everything Reston has to offer — you can walk to Lake Anne, jog on the nearby Reston Association paths, or be at Reston Town Center in a matter of minutes.

Fairway Drive and Hook Road, North Reston, VA

Fairway Drive Reston VirginiaBuilt in the 1960s, the Fairway Drive and Hook Road (which literally hooks off Fairway around the baseball fields and tennis courts) neighborhood in the Lake Anne area of Reston is the perfect spot for anyone who wants to be able to walk to everything. This neighborhood backs up to the Hidden Creek Country Club golf course, and so most of the houses have an amazing view.

With a few exceptions, the single family homes are classic contemporary style, most with three or four bedrooms. The homes are typically two-story, and many have brick exteriors.

The homes on Hook road line only one side of the street. The inner space of the horseshoe houses a baseball diamond for little league, RA tennis courts, and a basketball court provides entertainment all summer. And there is plenty of room to lay out a blanket for a family picnic.

Fairway Drive and Hook Road are a quick walk to Lake Anne Village Center, and just a little further to Reston Town Center. Lake Anne Elementary School is just across the street, making morning walks to school a breeze. This charming, quiet (well, except for little league games) neighborhood is the perfect location for any family that wants to be in the middle of everything but still live in an established neighborhood.

Ivy Oak Cluster, North Reston, VA

ivy oak clusterWhen most people think of condo living in Reston, they think of the high-rise buildings in and around Reston Town Center. Guess what? Within a half mile of Reston Town Center, you can find a condominium community of townhouses. That's right. Townhouses. Ivy Oak Cluster is the perfect place for anyone who wants the ease of condo living -- that is, someone else to take care of all the exterior maintenance -- without living in a high rise.

Ivy Oak Cluster was built in 1970/71 and consists of 96 2-story, 3 or 4 bedroom townhomes.  Each has a great backyard space, many of which are fenced. The neighborhood also has a large common space with a wonderful playground.

Ivy Oak is located off North Shore Drive, close to Temporary Road. There is a secret path (at one time a service road) between the cluster and the Fannie Mae building, and that secret path means leads to Old Reston Avenue and the W&OD trail...making a walk over to Reston Town Center quick and easy.

Ivy Oak is a gem, especially for families with young children (they will love the large playground!). And, not only can you walk to Reston Town Center, the cluster is close to both Whole Foods and Harris Teeter and has easy access to the Reston metro station. Children attend Lake Anne Elementary School, which is just one mile down the street, Langston Hughes Middle School and South Lakes High School.

Chatham Colony Cluster, Lake Anne Reston

Chatham Colony CourtIf you are looking for a charming, friendly neighborhood, Chatham Colony Cluster in the Lake Anne area of Reston is a perfect fit. It is the kind of neighborhood where neighbors know each other and children wander freely in and out of each other homes.

This is a small cluster of about 45 Colonial style townhomes. These townhomes have brick exteriors, shuttered windows, two designated parking spaces and wooded backyards. Like many Reston homes built in the 1970’s, each has beautiful hardwood floors and large windows. With three bedrooms and full basements, each home offers plenty of space for growing families and empty nesters alike.

Perhaps one of the best features is that this neighborhood sits right off Moorings and North Shore Drive, just a five-minute walk to Lake Anne Village and a five minute drive to the Reston Metro station. Although not on Lake Anne, the Cluster does have a private dock for those with canoes, kayaks or small sail boats. The Cluster also offers easy access to the Reston Association pathway that circles Lake Anne, making walks around the picturesque lake easy.

Children attend Forrest Edge Elementary, Langston Hughes Middle School, and South Lakes High School. The North Shore Pool is an easy walk across Lake Anne Plaza, and the sprinkler park is practically in the neighborhood’s backyard.
