North Reston

The Beauty of the Uplands Neighborhood, Reston, VA

uplands reston vaThe Uplands is the quintessential Reston neighborhood -- while it is convenient to all major roads, it feels like it is miles away from everything. As one of Reston's older neighborhoods, and one that borders Lake Fairfax Park, the wooded areas are well established. Uplands has a great layout with just two access points. While there is a convenient secret short cut over to Rt. 7, for the most part the people who travel on Ring Road live in Uplands.

The Uplands neighborhood includes both townhome clusters and single family homes in a wide variety of styles, from ranch styles houses to large contemporary and pretty much everything in between. One of the best features of Uplands is the toddler and young kid-oriented Uplands pool. Okay, adults enjoy playing in the pools fountains too.

There is also a huge recreation area that includes two tennis courts, a full sized basketball court, and a baseball diamond. For those who like walking their dogs in the woods, or just going for a great hike, there is easy access into Lake Fairfax park via Buttermilk Creek trail. And in the winter, Uplands has the best sledding hill around.

Uplands is about a five-minute drive to Reston Town Center, and same to the Reston Metro Station. But the neighborhood is so tranquil and beautiful, you may never want to leave.

Heron House, Lake Anne, Reston, VA

Heron House, the original Reston condos build in 1966, are still among the most beautiful condominiums in Reston. Sure, I may be biased because I live in Heron House, but I've heard other people say this too.

Comprised of 46 condominiums all with concrete balconies, Heron House is Reston's original high-rise. It is situated on the edge of Lake Anne at the Southern end of Washington Plaza (which residents simply call Lake Anne). The condos have one to three bedrooms with commanding views of the lake and Reston. Sitting on the balcony sipping a glass of wine and looking at the fountain in the lake is one of my favorite things to do.

The contemporary condos are well designed to maximize every inch of space -- even the smaller one-bedroom units feel spacious. Perhaps it is the view, or perhaps it is the well thought out floor plans. Whatever the magic combination, it works. And Heron House has stood the test of time. The design is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. And most of the units have been upgraded with new kitchens and baths.

You never really have to leave the neighborhood -- Lake Anne boasts several great restaurants, the farmer's market, and festivals year round. It's a wonderful place to live! It's also only a one-mile walk along gorgeous trails to Reston Town Center (or a quick drive), and it's close to the Reston Station and Dulles Toll Road. What's not to love?

Arbor Glenn Cluster in North Reston, VA

Arbor Glenn ClusterPrivacy in a townhouse? That doesn't seem possible. Many people who choose townhouse living do so at the expense of feeling like they have any real privacy. But it doesn't have to be that way. Miller & Smith designed Arbor Glenn cluster to maximize privacy. The 44 townhouses are arranged in groups of four to six in a "Z" row, which means that each house feels more private.

But the privacy doesn't stop there. A private, one-way road loops the cluster, adding to the charm of the neighborhood and keeping through traffic out. So while Arbor Glenn is right off busy Lake Newport Road, and close to Reston Parkway (only the soccer fields stand between the two), the neighborhood is very quiet.

Built between 1986 and 1988 when the North Point area of Reston was built up, these spacious townhomes have three or four bedrooms. While the community is close to North Point Village Center and the bustle of Reston Parkway, it's nestled in a wooded area that makes it feel more secluded than it is. Arbor Glenn is less than a five-minute walk to North Point Village Center and Lake Newport pool (Reston's only Olympic sized pool), and Reston Town Center is less than 2 miles away.

And Arbor Glenn has all of the pros of a townhome community, including beautiful common areas that you don't have to maintain! That's right; you don't need a lawnmower if you live here.

European Flair North Reston Style

Why are European's so fit? In part, because they walk everywhere. Reston in general was model off of that European idea, and is a pedestrian-friendly place. The West Market community in North Reston is the perfect example with grocery stores, restaurants, a movie theater, and anything else you could need just steps from the front door (even Target is walking distance).

West Market comprises two condo communities: Madison Park Condominiums and Lincoln Park Condominiums. Madison Park has 122 condominium units (24 of which are townhouses) within seven buildings. The Lincoln Park community has 104 luxury, 2-story townhome-style condos.

Five different builders came together to create this architecturally diverse community. Most people first notice the rounded exteriors that are unlike anything else in Reston. Spacious common areas include a club house, which includes a main hall and kitchen for meetings and gatherings, a fitness center and sauna, and an outdoor pool.

This neighborhood was built in the late 1990's just a few steps from Reston Town Center. That means dozens of restaurants, shops, and entertainment are next door. In addition, Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter are close by, and the W&OD trail and YMCA are practically in the backyard. You don't need a car to live here, but if you do have one it is a quick hop onto Fairfax County Parkway and the Dulles Toll Road.

West Market is a great choice for anyone wanting to live in the Reston Town Center area without actually being in Town Center.

Ivy Oak Cluster, North Reston, VA

ivy oak clusterWhen most people think of condo living in Reston, they think of the high-rise buildings in and around Reston Town Center. Guess what? Within a half mile of Reston Town Center, you can find a condominium community of townhouses. That's right. Townhouses. Ivy Oak Cluster is the perfect place for anyone who wants the ease of condo living -- that is, someone else to take care of all the exterior maintenance -- without living in a high rise.

Ivy Oak Cluster was built in 1970/71 and consists of 96 2-story, 3 or 4 bedroom townhomes.  Each has a great backyard space, many of which are fenced. The neighborhood also has a large common space with a wonderful playground.

Ivy Oak is located off North Shore Drive, close to Temporary Road. There is a secret path (at one time a service road) between the cluster and the Fannie Mae building, and that secret path means leads to Old Reston Avenue and the W&OD trail...making a walk over to Reston Town Center quick and easy.

Ivy Oak is a gem, especially for families with young children (they will love the large playground!). And, not only can you walk to Reston Town Center, the cluster is close to both Whole Foods and Harris Teeter and has easy access to the Reston metro station. Children attend Lake Anne Elementary School, which is just one mile down the street, Langston Hughes Middle School and South Lakes High School.

Bentana Woods, North Reston

Many people don’t realize how close Reston is to the lovely Lake Fairfax Park. In fact, several Reston neighborhoods back up to the park. Bentana Woods is one of them.

The rustic nature around Bentana Woods will make you forget you live in a bustling urban area. Built in1972 by Bennett of Virginia, this community is located in the Tall Oaks section of Reston, Virginia. I recently found the original marketing brochure, which was pretty entertaining. Some of the information is not relevant anymore (I assume most people have replaced the Formica-surfaced cabinet tops by now, and Lake Anne Elementary School has indeed been built). However, some of the selling points are very much still selling points today (I edited some of these, but I really enjoyed the language… you can probably tell which bits are from the original):

  • Bentana Woods offers something special to the family that seeks the values of home ownership with a maximum of space and good design and a minimum of care and maintenance.
  • Cohen, Haft & Associates designed the townhouses to provide flowing indoor-outdoor space.
  • Influenced by California’s early Spanish missions, the design utilizes dark wood trim to give dramatic emphasis to exteriors of brick, stucco, and wood.
  • Interior living spaces range from 2,120 to 2,515 square feet, for a total of nine floor plans. There are three and four bedroom models are available, with 2.5 to 3.5 baths.
  • Garages and step down living rooms are features in many models. Fireplaces are also included in many of them.
  • Kitchens have received special attention in Bentana Woods to give each family added ease and convenience. All kitchens open both to the dining room and family room to facilitate formal and informal entertaining in either.
  • That bane of townhouses — the dark stairway — doesn’t exist in Bentana Woods. Skylights or large doors and spacious bay windows also brighten dining rooms and family rooms, creating the feeling of breezy openness, and provide dramatic views of the rolling woodland.

All of these features are things my clients want in their homes. Bentana Woods is actually two separate clusters — Bentana Woods Cluster has 48 homes while Bentana Woods West has 108 homes. More than 50% of the neighborhood lands are common areas with open grass, tot lots, and stands of trees — trees that the National Wildlife Federation has certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat.

In addition, Bentana Woods is about 1 mile from the Reston Metro Station and short drive to Reston Town Center or Lake Anne Plaza. The location is fantastic, which makes the fact that these townhouses are charming and well designed even better.

If you want to be close to the action, but feel like you’re living in a National park, Bentana Woods is the Reston neighborhood for you!

Lakeside Living in North Reston

North Reson VA Lake LifeWe love our lakes in Reston, and we love the being near all of the amenities Reston has to offer. The Lake Newport area of North Reston delivers both — whether you want a contemporary or Colonial single family home, or a spacious patio home, or even condos.

Whatever style of home you want, your neighborhood focal point is Lake Newport, a 12-acre man-made lake built in 1981. On any beautiful day, you'll find residents canoeing and fishing in the lake, or using the approximately 1-mile walking path that loops the lake and takes you on a tour of the neighborhood.

The Lake Newport neighborhood is fairly large and divided into several smaller sub-neighborhoods. Town and patio homes can be found at Hemingway, while large, luxurious single-family homes are located in the Newport, Greenwich Point, BelCastle, Newport Shores, and Newport Cove neighborhoods. All of the homes were built in the 80s and 90s. Here is a rundown of the sub-neighborhoods:

  • Lake Newport Road: This neighborhood is located at the eastern end of Lake Newport Road off North Village Road. Many of the 15 lovely custom-built 3- to 5-bedroom single-family homes are direct lakefront.
  • Newport Shores: Located on Waterfront Road off Center Harbor Drive, this neighborhood has 30 multi-level 3- to 5-bedroom patio homes, of which 25% are direct lakefront.
  • Newport: On Regatta Lane off the Baron Cameron end of North Village Road, this neighborhood has 30 multi-level 3- to 5-bedroom patio homes. About 20% are direct lakefront.
  • Newport Cove: This lovely neighborhood on Newport Cove Lane off the Baron Cameron end of North Village Road has 8 multi-level 3- to 5-bedroom single-family homes, of which 60% are direct lakefront.
  • Hemmingway: At Hemingway Court off Center Harbor Drive, this neighborhood offers a combination of 25 multi-level 3- to 5-bedroom patio homes and 50 townhomes. About 15% of the townhomes are direct lakefront.
  • Greenwich Point: At Greenwich Point Road off Center Harbor Drive, this neighborhood has about 25 lovely multi-level 3- to 5-bedroom patio homes, of which 25% are direct lakefront.

Regardless of which sub-neighborhood residents live in, you will find them all enjoying the RA tennis courts and Lake Newport pool (Reston's only Olympic-sized, 50m swimming pool). On gorgeous days, the paths will be filled with people walking over to North Point Village Shopping Center to enjoy a coffee, ice cream, or a great meal or to do their weekly grocery shopping.

Lake Newport is a fantastic area for growing families or those who are ready to downsize—it has something for everyone.

Arbor Glenn Cluster, North Reston

Arbor Glen Cluster Reston VAYes, you can have it all. The privacy of a single-family home; the convenience of a townhome community; and easy access to shopping, schools, and recreation does all exist in one place. And that place is Arbor Glen in North Reston.

The Arbor Glen community of 44 townhomes was built between 1986 and 1988. Privacy was top of mind when Miller & Smith designed these spacious 3 and 4 bedroom homes. The townhouses are arranged in groups of four to six in a “Z” row, which means that each house feels more private—you never look into a neighbor’s house, and the row design minimizes noise from the adjoining homes.

Nestled in a wooded area, the common space is tranquil and beautiful. While the neighborhood may feel secluded, Arbor Glen is less than a five-minute walk to North Point Village Center and Lake Newport pool (Reston’s only Olympic sized pool), and Reston Town Center is less than 2 miles away. While Arbor Glen is right off busy Lake Newport Road, and close to Reston Parkway (only the soccer fields stand between the two), the neighborhood is exceptionally quiet.

Yes, Arbor Glen Cluster in Reston, VA is one of those rare neighborhoods that has it all—lovely architecture, plenty of common space, and privacy. Lot’s of privacy.

Fairway Drive and Hook Road, North Reston, VA

Fairway Drive Reston VirginiaBuilt in the 1960s, the Fairway Drive and Hook Road (which literally hooks off Fairway around the baseball fields and tennis courts) neighborhood in the Lake Anne area of Reston is the perfect spot for anyone who wants to be able to walk to everything. This neighborhood backs up to the Hidden Creek Country Club golf course, and so most of the houses have an amazing view.

With a few exceptions, the single family homes are classic contemporary style, most with three or four bedrooms. The homes are typically two-story, and many have brick exteriors.

The homes on Hook road line only one side of the street. The inner space of the horseshoe houses a baseball diamond for little league, RA tennis courts, and a basketball court provides entertainment all summer. And there is plenty of room to lay out a blanket for a family picnic.

Fairway Drive and Hook Road are a quick walk to Lake Anne Village Center, and just a little further to Reston Town Center. Lake Anne Elementary School is just across the street, making morning walks to school a breeze. This charming, quiet (well, except for little league games) neighborhood is the perfect location for any family that wants to be in the middle of everything but still live in an established neighborhood.

Summer Ridge Condos, North Point, Reston

North Reston's Summer Ridge Condominiums are not only beautiful inside, the contemporary exterior design has charming cross gabled roofs — the front facing gables are above a column of recessed balconies. The meticulously landscape common areas are a lovely and peaceful view from those balconies. Even with parking in front of the buildings, this just doesn’t feel like a condo community.

Summer Ridge is located off Lake Newport Road just west of Reston Parkway. In fact, it’s just a few blocks from North Point Village Center, so you can walk to grocery store and restaurants. Reston Town Center is less than two miles away, and is easily walkable if you feel inclined. Also within walking distance of Summer Ridge is the Lake Newport Recreation Area with Reston’s only Olympic size pool, or Autumn Wood pool, which has a little more shade. Both are great after a summer walk along the RA paths!

The neighborhood consists of about 170 units built between 1987 and 1988. The neighborhood is laid out with 17 two- and three-story buildings looping around Summerchase Circle and Summerchase Court.

The condo development features three different models, all of which are modern and feel spacious, despite their modest footprints. Want an open floor plan? They’ve got it along with large picture windows or glass sliding doors opening up to a back patio or balcony. The fabulous design makes you feel like you’re in a much larger space than you are.

  • June Model = 665 square feet with one bedroom and one bath
  • July Model = 952 square feet with two bedrooms and one and a half baths
  • August Model = 1042 square feet with two bedrooms and two baths.

These condos are great for singles looking for a beautiful, but smaller space away from Reston Town Center, but still accessible to everything. Take a look at them today!
