Find Your Wooded Sanctuary: Bentana Woods

Bentana WoodsDo you ever dream of finding a quick place in the woods, free from the hustle and bustle of urban life? Except that you like the hustle and bustle of urban life, so you don’t want to go live in the woods. What if you could find both? Bentana Woods is the neighborhood for you.

Bennett of Virginia built these town homes in1972. They’re located in the Tall Oaks section of Reston, Virginia, about 1 mile from the Wiehle Metro Station (which means you could walk there if you wanted to). They’re also a quick walk into Lake Fairfax Park and short drive to Reston Town Center or Lake Anne Plaza. The original Tall Oaks Village Center is slated for redevelopment, so within the next few years there will be new shops and restaurants all a quick walk from your front door. But you won’t be able to tell because this neighborhood is so secluded you feel like you’re in rural Virginia.

The fact that these 3 to 4 bedroom, 1,700 square foot townhouses are charming and well designed is icing on the cake.

Bentana Woods is actually two separate clusters — Bentana Woods Cluster has 48 homes while Bentana Woods West has 108 homes. More than 50% of the neighborhood lands are common areas with open grass, tot lots, and stands of trees — trees that the National Wildlife Federation has certified as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat.

If you want to be close to the action, but feel like you’re living in a National park, Bentana Woods is the Reston neighborhood for you!

Bayfield Station Cluster in North Reston

In the North Point area of Reston, just off Reston Parkway, is a charming cluster of 50 townhouses called Bayfield Station. Designed in a Garrison Colonial style and built in 1984, these small homes are either 1,120 or 1,160 square feet. While the lots vary in size, all of them have a fenced back yard.

The Bayfield Station townhouses are positioned in groups, most of which are face Bayfield Court (the cluster’s main road). Three groups face into the wooded buffer areas.

The cluster is comprised of two streets: Bayfield Court and the shorter, Bayfield Way, with the two making a “T” shape. This shape provides “dead ends,” which means the cluster does not have a through street, minimizing traffic through the neighborhood.

Bayfield Station is just a few blocks from North Point Village Center, which has a Giant food store, gas station, several banks, a selection of restaurants, a gym, dance studio, and retail stores.  Reston Town Center is a little over a mile away. The close proximity to Reston Parkway makes getting to major roads and the Reston Metro Station (3 miles away) a breeze.

The cluster is also close to Lake Newport swimming pool, soccer fields and tennis courts. Still within a mile is Brown’s Chapel Park, which is an access point to trail networks, the Lake Newport tennis courts, featuring six lighted courts, plus facilities for other sports-baseball, basketball, volleyball.

Summitt Chase Cluster, North Reston

Summitt Chase ClusterThe North Point area of Reston is a wonderful community. Most of it was built in the 1980s, and there is a range of homes styles. The Summitt Chase townhouses are a lovely community of 127 two-story Ranch townhomes built in 1988. The homes range in size from 1,300 to 1,700 square feet of living space. The cluster features several designs, some with a dormer, a side entrance, or a split level. Some homes have a porch, others have columns, a balustrade, a portico, or a door with a lintel. All have multi-paned hung windows with shutters.

Like many of the neighborhoods in North Point, Summitt Chase is located on an elevated, wide open setting with beautiful landscaping in the common areas. The homes are placed in groups of four, five, or six, with plenty of surrounding space and set back from the road for more privacy. Each townhouse has a walkway and front yard.

One of the nicest features of living in Reston is access to the 55-mile network of multi-use trails. The North Point Loop is the closest to Summitt Chase Cluster, and you will see neighborhood residents walking their dogs there daily. You can also use the trail to walk the half mile to North Point Village Center (with a Giant, Starbucks, restaurants and other retail shops).

Reston Town Center is just a quick drive down Reston Parkway, as is the Dulles Toll Road. Really, you can’t the location!

Newport Springs Cluster, North Reston

Newport Springs Cluster, photo from Zillow.comBack in the late 1980s, the face of North Reston changed. In 1989, Newport Springs Cluster joined the collection of close communities that line Reston Parkway. Newport Springs is a community of 28 townhouses designed with Folk Victorian architecture, homes that are relatively plain in construction and then embellished with decorative trim.

Grouped into six buildings fronting Newport Spring Court, the street meanders in a wide curve with a cul-de-sac at the end—providing privacy and safety as there is no through street.

The homes are three stories high with a garage on the first level and a flight of stairs leading to the front entry on the second floor. The end units have wrap around porches; the others have recessed front entries. The three-bedroom homes range in size from 1,400 to 1,550 square feet.  The lot sizes range from around 1,500 to 2,200 square feet.

Located off Lake Newport Road between Reston Parkway and Fairfax County Parkway, Newport Springs Cluster is walking distance to North Point Village Center. There you’ll find a Giant food store, Starbucks, restaurants, gym, gas station, and more.

This is a great neighborhood for a growing family.

Lakeside Cluster, Lake Anne, Reston

lakeside cluster townhomeI’m partial to Lake Anne neighborhoods. I can’t help it; it’s my neighborhood and I think these little communities are beautiful. They’re also convenient to all the amenities Reston has to offer — including the restaurants at Lake Anne. Lakeside Cluster is one of these gorgeous communities.

Most of the attention around Lake Anne focuses on the famous Waterview Cluster. As a result, Lakeside Cluster doesn’t get as much attention. The community is okay with that. This is a friendly, quiet, unassuming neighborhood.

Lakeside Cluster has the same amenities all of the neighborhoods that border Reston’s Lake Anne share — access to the lake, a quick walk to Lake Anne Village Center, well-designed homes (many of which are direct lakefront).

These townhomes were built between 1965 and 1969. The 90 units are two and three levels with two to four bedrooms. They also have garages (which makes them different than most of their Lake Anne neighbors). All homes have lake access via a trail to the cluster dock, even if they are not direct lakefront property.

The Cluster couldn’t be positioned better. It is located on Greenbriar Road and Orchard Lane off Fairway Drive, which is the south shore of Lake Anne. Fairway Drive provides easy access to both North Shore Drive and Wiehle Avenue.

lakeside cluster dockFor families with children, the cluster is an easy walk to Lake Anne Elementary. Children also attend Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School. For the parents, Lake Side Cluster is only 1.5 miles to the Reston Station Metro, and a short hop to Reston Town Center and the Toll Road. And, of course, a five minute walk to Lake Anne Village Center — home of the Lake Anne Brew House, Lake Anne Coffee House and Wine Bar, Reston Farmer’s Market and several other awesome mom-and-pop restaurants.

Inlet Cluster, North Reston

inlet clusterInlet Cluster in the Lake Anne neighborhood sports is a small community of 63 townhomes. While none of them are directly on Lake Anne, the cluster has private dock at the inlet where residents can moor their boats.

These contemporary 3-level, 3- to 5-bedroom homes were built in 1971. Every house has a carport space, and there is additional parking throughout the neighborhood. The cluster was designed for privacy, with the homes located behind the parking structures. Having been built in 1971, the trees and landscaping are mature—the neighborhood has a feeling of being nestled in the woods.

Inlet Cluster is located off Wiehle Avenue just north of the Lake Anne dam. It’s about a five-minute walk to Lake Anne Village Center (or a quick paddle in the canoe).

inlet cluster housesThe local schools are Lake Anne Elementary, Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School. With easy access to Wiehle Avenue, the Reston Station and Toll Road are only minutes away.

Heather Knoll Cluster, North Reston

heather knollFor families with young children, living on a cul de sac is great because it provide a safe place for the children to play. Perhaps that’s why the families I work with love Heather Knoll Cluster in North Reston.

Designed by Berry & Co., Heather Knoll Cluster was built in the early 1990s. It is a small community of 52 townhouses distributed among 13 buildings. Each home has a traditional brick front with fine detailing, classic cedar siding and elegant trim. The homes come in three different styles, with variations in room sizes and overall square footage. They are all two levels with a basement, three bedrooms, and two and half bath. They also each have a one-car garage — a bonus for Reston townhomes — and privacy fences separating the yards. And they have fireplaces!

Heather Knoll Cluster is located on Woodbrook Court off of Woodbrook Lane and Wiehle Avenue in the North Point area of Reston. The neighborhood is close to the Fairfax County Parkway and Route 7.

The surrounding area has wonderful walking paths and plenty of trees and nature. North Hills pool and tennis courts are about a five-minute walk, and North Point Village a 10 to 15 minute walk (depending on how fast you walk).

This is the perfect neighborhood for anyone who wants something slightly off the beaten path, but still wants to have all the amenities of Reston easily accessible.

Lake Life in South Reston

Lake Thoreau in South Reston, Virginia is one of the most serene spots in Reston. The charming homes are located with in walking distance of South Lakes Village Center, and are a short drive to the Dulles Toll Road and Reston Metro Station.

Built between 1975 and 1978, Lakewinds is actually divided into two clusters: Lakewinds I and Lakewinds II. In total, the two clusters consist of 93 brick and cedar townhomes — 46 in Lakewinds I and 47 in Lakewinds II. The 3-level 3 and 4 bedroom homes each have assigned parking spaces; the Lakewinds II townhomes have one carport spot.

About 70% of the homes are lakefront, and all have lake access. In nice weather, you will see the residents enjoying their small boats or barges.

The local schools are Terraset Elementary School, Langston Hughes Middle School, and South Lakes High School—all of which are within walking distance. Other nearby South Reston attractions include the Reston Regional Golf Course and Walker Nature Education Center. In fact, this neighborhood is great for anyone who values spending time outdoors!

Three Great Communities off Wainwright Drive

I love wandering through the original Reston communities. I’m always struck by the differences in each neighborhood, even those adjacent to each other. Wainwright Drive in the Lake Anne area is a great example. The three townhome communities couldn’t be more different, despite all sharing an excellent location near Reston Town Center and Lake Anne and having been developed within years of each other.

Coleson Cluster

Coleson Cluster, Wainwright DriveMost people who know anything of Reston’s history know about Waterview Cluster — the iconic townhomes on Lake Anne. Few people know that award-winning architect Chloethiel Woodard Smith designed another community of townhomes with the same floor plan and style as nearby Waterview. Coleson Cluster was built during the mid 1960s and comprises 45 townhomes spread over four and a half acres of lush lawn and trees. The townhouses in this beautiful community have a charming mid-century modern meets cottage vibe. They are light and airy, with light and inviting interior spaces. With flat roofs, large windows and contemporary style, they range in size from 1,500 to 2,800 square feet.

Mediterranean Villa, Reston

Mediterranean Villa, Wainwright DriveContinuing the European feel is Mediterranean Villa. Developed in 1970, the Mediterranean Villa homes feature white stucco exteriors with tiled roofs, 2-car garages, and about 1900 to 2500 square feet of living space. It’s a small and tight-knit community of 37 homes sited on a quiet cul-de-sac. Yes, these patio homes are nestled among oaks and pines rather than the coast, but they are as bright and airy as you will find anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Wainwright Cluster

Wainwright Cluster, Wainwright DriveBoston-based PARD Team, a young multi-disciplinary group of urban planners, architects, researchers and designers designed Wainwright Cluster in 1966. The cluster was part of the PARD Team’s mission to meet "the new challenges created by the uncontrolled urbanization of our environment, recent discoveries in the fields of social research, and rapid changes in building technology."

These homes were designed for first time homeowners. There are six models varying in size and layout. However, spacious bedrooms, large closets, ample storage space, breakfast nooks, and ground floor powder rooms are standard in all of them. The homes also feature spacious carports, large storage sheds, well-equipped play areas and private outdoor patios. Grouped into neighborhood subclusters, each neighborhood group is situated around a common landscaped green. Large windows at the rear of each home provide panoramic views of the thickly wooded areas surrounding the subclusters.

All of these neighborhoods are ideally located. Just off North Shore Drive, both Reston Town Center and Lake Anne are an easy walk. In fact, the Reston Association paths in this area are among community favorites and you are guaranteed to run into friends as you walk. The neighborhood is also close to the Reston Metro, Dulles Toll Road and Dulles airport. The kids can walk to Lake Anne Elementary, which is just two blocks away. And the entire family can enjoy the Reston pools and tennis courts, also within walking distance.

Reston Townhomes Are Waiting for You

Reston townhomesI sometimes think that people visiting Reston may think condos and apartments are the only living options. Certainly in the Reston Town Center area where more condos are being built all the time it seems that way. But many long-time Reston residents associate Reston living with townhouses. That makes sense with close to a 140 separate townhouse clusters in Reston. Each has its own personality too.

Often when I’m working with new clients who aren’t from the area, they’ve never considered living in a townhouse. It’s a condo or single-family home. They perceive townhomes as dark and small with little privacy from neighbors. I just laugh a little. Because when they visit some of the townhome communities around here, they quickly change their minds.

Our townhome clusters are wildly varied from the comfortable and modest to over-the-top luxurious. Many are on lakes or a golf course. All have beautiful, well-kept common areas. What’s best for new homebuyers is that Reston townhomes offer a wide range of housing options for almost every price point. That means neighborhoods are often a combination of young families, singles, or couples who have downsized. It’s a wonderful, eclectic mix. And for busy professionals, there is the bonus of a lovely neighborhood that you don’t have to care for — your cluster maintains the common property.

If you’ve never considered townhome living because you’re worried about the size, the light or living in such close proximity, may I invite you to tour some Reston townhomes. In my opinion, we do it better than any other town. From the first communities built in Reston, Waterview and Hickory Clusters, to West Market built in 1998, Reston has perfected townhome living.
